The future has arrived
Are you ready for it?
The open web is changing and evolving everyday and developers now have tools at their disposal
to make stuff so awesome what 5 years ago we just could have dream of it.
Both HTML5 and CSS3
are emerging techonologies that would be shaping the future of the web for years to come but this is a good time for futurist
and people who think ahead of their time to start playing with the web of tomorrow.
The big question
So what is this all about?
Obviously inspired by the legendary CSS Zen Garden, we wanted to make
a playground site where both web developers and the general public could envision the web as it should be
if we could build the web today with all the open technologies available today.
You can even explain this site as: How would be the web if no body used Internet Explorer
What you are reading is a simple and static HTML5 which is enhanced
with a CSS stylesheet and/or a Javascript Script authored by some talented
web artist developer. You can choose another style from the list or the gallery and
while this content will stay the same, the CSS/JS enhacement will make it look like something completely new.
What's the matter with all this future stuff
Or… why this looks so awful on my browser?
Some years ago, some web visionaires like Jeffrey Zeldman and Dave Shea among others started the web standards movement and
led a revolution that have completely changed the face of the internet since. Every other breaktrough including the web 2.0
and social media may have not hapenned whitout the vast adoption of the web standards.
But even now, progress has been haltered because of the necessity that developers have of supporting old technology, namely
obsolete web browsers and people who refuse to update their use of that ancient technology.
Fortunately, things are slowly starting to change and now everybody has the option to adopt these new techonogies which are being
pushed by the makers of the new superior browsers of today.
The power of the open web
The new powerful tools on the developers toolbox
These technologies are been slowly supported by the new superior browsers,
but they have been shown a great commitment to continually grow on the support of them.
HTML 5
Is the fifth major revision of Hypertext Markup Language, the language that powers the web.
It is an feature-rich open language wich provides new elements which are semantic implementations of
structures commonly used by web developers and a plugin-less <audio> and <video> tags.
It also sports a number of new APIs like canvas for
drawing support on the browser window, offline storage, drag and drop, and much more.
CSS 3
The Cascading Style Sheets as the presentation layer of the web has not stopped on its constant
evolution and now, the level 3 of the specification offers visual designers an incredible set of tools
to make beautiful web pages that in the past have been utterly hard or completely impossible to design.
Javascript
And of course, we cannot forget the behavioral third layer of the web, the backbone of the so-called Web 2.0,
that is ECMAScript 3 or as we affectionally call it: Javascript.
Wisely used, web developers can do a lot of wonderful things with Javascript and DOMScripting
to enhance the user experience. More so, if they don't need to worry about supporting old browsers and their poor developer tools.
I want to participate
You are welcome to try
Visual designers, graphic artists and talented developers are encouraged to participate. Do something wonderful,
something that you can feel proud of and something that you want to share with the world.
Benefits
Why participate? For recognition, inspiration, and a resource we can all refer to when making the case for
progressive enhanced design. This is sorely needed, even today. More and more major sites are taking the leap,
but not enough have. One day this gallery will be a historical curiosity; that day is not today.
